Rafa Benitez, a former manager of Chelsea, has issued a warning to current manager Graham Potter, saying that playing admirable football at Chelsea without any victories won't rescue him.

After their Champions League loss in Zagreb, Chelsea fired Thomas Tuchel and named former Brighton manager Potter as their new manager.

The 47-year-old played Red Bull Salzburg to a 1-1 draw in his maiden Champions League encounter, which he was unable to win.

Potter was brought up when Benitez, Chelsea's temporary manager in 2012–13, was questioned on SkySports.

"He did a wonderful job [at Brighton]," he remarked.

The climate was favorable for him since you can create something when you have good ideas and are given time.

"Now that Chelsea is under pressure, he will feel it. I really like him, therefore I hope he succeeds. But he must triumph. You can no longer play nice football for six months and come up empty-handed.

"He needs to compete for awards and be among the top four. It adds more weight. The supporters will be picky.

"To compete against Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham, you must win.

"It will require more of him. He is knowledgeable, but can he apply it to Chelsea? We will find out later.
