Benue State Pensioners Dispute Governor Ortom's Unpaid Benefits for Six Years - Feed9ja

The government owes retirees between 37 and 74 months' worth of pension arrears at the state and local government levels, respectively, the pensioners bemoaned.

Pensioners in Benue State have protested the Governor Samuel Ortom-led state administration over the nonpayment of their pensions for the previous six years and two months under the banner of the Concerned/Aggrieved Pensioners (74 months).

According to PM News, a large group of irate pensioners, led by their chairman Akosu Loream, took to the streets of Makurdi, the state capital, demanding that their pensions be paid immediately.

According to reports, Loream, who escorted the demonstrators to the state House of Assembly where they met with Speaker Titus Uba, explained that their goal was to inform the Speaker of their situation so that he might encourage the governor to comply with their demands.

According to Loream, "Pensioners are dying every day as a result of non-payment of pension and gratuity, as the majority of them are on a specific diet and medications but could not afford either a maintenance ration or medications. Pensioners have suffered a great deal as a result, including being unable to purchase healthy food.

We have lost our spouses to "okada guys" as a result of the difficulties brought on by the failure to pay our pension and gratuity because it is no longer feasible for us to support them.

The state government's failure to unify the pensions and gratuities paid to retirees, where some of them were still receiving N800 monthly, was also bemoaned by the pensioners.

Oliver Aguda, Deputy Clerk of the State House of Assembly, who welcomed the demonstrators on behalf of the Speaker, responded to them by saying that Uba, who is also the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, had left the state.
